Drop-Off & Pick-Up Procedures

Three smiling CHES studentsStudent Hours

Students may enter the school building between 7:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. There is no adult supervision for students prior to 7:30 a.m. Students who arrive between 7:30 a.m. and 7:45 a.m. should report to the cafeteria until school starts. Our school day officially begins at 8:00 a.m.; therefore, any students arriving after 8:00 a.m. are officially tardy. If your child arrives after 8:00 a.m., please park in a designated parking spot and enter the building to sign him/her in so he/she can receive a tardy pass. A student who is consistently tardy misses vital instruction. Please strive to have your children at school on time daily. It will help to develop a positive pattern for them as they mature.

Morning Arrival for Car Riders

Parents may drop off students beginning at 7:30 a.m. The designated area for drop-off is the parking lot to the right side of the school. Please enter the lot and continue around the perimeter until you reach the sidewalk closest to the building. Once cars line up along the sidewalk, students may exit their vehicles. In order to prevent traffic congestion, all vehicles along the sidewalk should unload at the same time before exiting to make room for the next group of cars. Beginning at 7:30 a.m., a staff member will ensure that students make their way into the building safely and assist kindergarten students and those with special needs in exiting vehicles. We encourage all other students to open the door and exit onto the sidewalk independently to prevent traffic delays.

Escorting Your Child Into the School Building

Parents who wish to escort their children into the school lobby should park in the parking lot in front of the school building. Beginning the second week of school, we will designate our lobby as the “Hug and Kiss Goodbye Zone.” We encourage parents to use this zone to wish their children a great day at school, then allow students to walk to their classrooms without a parent to foster their independence. Rest assured that we station plenty of staff and student safety patrol members in our hallways to assist students as needed.

Notifying Staff of Changes in Afternoon Dismissal Plans

If you know that your child’s typical dismissal plan will change, please fill out the transportation note. If an emergency arises and you need to make a last minute change, please call the school office at (804) 723-3620. Please do not e-mail or text transportation changes.

Early Dismissal for Appointments

If your child has a medical appointment that requires early dismissal, please complete and send in a CHES Change in Dismissal Plans form to make your child’s teacher and office staff aware. Parents wishing to pick their children up prior to our regular dismissal (2:20 p.m.) should do so in the office before 2:00 p.m. No dismissals will occur between 2:00 p.m. and 2:20 p.m. After 2:00 p.m., teachers will dismiss students in the car loop.

Afternoon Dismissal for Car Riders

If you plan to pick your child up from school at dismissal, please enter the parking lot to the right side of our school building. Be sure you display your blue car loop pass on your dashboard. If you need an additional pass, we have them in the front office. Enter the lot and continue around the perimeter until you reach the sidewalk closest to the building. For safety reasons, please do not pass cars. As you approach the sidewalk, a staff member will ask you to sign your child out on a clipboard. When you get to the sidewalk, a staff member will help your child into the vehicle.
